TIRANA, Oct 9 /ATA/ – Albania’s judges gathered Thursday for an extraordinary national conference, convened by the Supreme Court, following the fatal shooting of Appeals Court judge Astrit Kalaja inside the Appeals Court in Tirana three days ago.

The meeting served as a call to action for greater protection of judges, the restoration of public respect for justice, and the elimination of hate speech targeting the judiciary.

Special Anti-Corruption Court Deputy Chair Erjon Bani described the killing as “a deep wound to the justice system” and urged the creation of a national security policy for courts, citing international examples such as the U.S. response after the attack on federal judge Esther Salas.

Administrative Appeals Court Deputy Chair Ardian Dvorani warned that the judiciary faces “an organized climate of threats and pressure” from elements within politics, business, and crime. He called for state intervention to guarantee judges’ safety, arguing that the attack exposed the fragility of court security and the need for long-term structural reforms, including digitalization and better staffing.

Judge Gerd Hoxha said the tragedy was “not an isolated act but the result of years of hostile public discourse” fueled by politics and the media. He appealed for a halt to hate speech and for joint efforts to rebuild public trust in justice.

All speakers stressed that judicial security is not a privilege but a fundamental condition for the rule of law and Albania’s EU integration.

“Without safe courts, there can be no independence, no justice, and no hope,” Bani concluded.
