TIRANA, Jan 20 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) on Tuesday called on the High Judicial Council (KLGJ) and the High Inspector of Justice (ILD) to formally confirm the termination of the mandate of Special Court judge Irena Gjoka, citing allegations that she concealed a criminal conviction in Greece.

In a letter signed by PD parliamentary group chairman Gazment Bardhi, the party said that, according to Albania’s General Prosecutor’s Office, Gjoka had been convicted in Greece and failed to disclose the conviction in mandatory self-declaration forms.

The opposition argues that this places the judge in a position of constitutional incompatibility and constitutes falsification of official documents, creating what it described as an “illegal and unconstitutional situation” within the judicial system.

DP lawmakers also expressed concern over what they called delays by the KLGJ and ILD in addressing the issue, warning that inaction could undermine public trust in the justice system.

Bardhi said the confirmation of ineligibility should have been made within two weeks of official notification, noting that Greek authorities have formally confirmed the conviction.

DP urged the judicial oversight bodies to act immediately in line with their constitutional and legal obligations, warning that further delays could have serious consequences for the public interest and the functioning of Albania’s justice system.
