TIRANA, Nov 13 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Thursday evening that Albania has strong potential to attract new investment, backed by the Italian government and the interest of major Italian companies.

Speaking to media in Rome, Rama said Italy’s industry tends not to expand aggressively abroad, but stressed that Albania aims to draw more large Italian investors.

“We could -and should -have more Italian companies in Albania. For this we need the support of the Italian government, as well as the attention and trust of major corporations,” he said.

Rama highlighted the long-standing presence of energy group Eni in Albania and said the government is finalising a strategic agreement with Italy’s San Donato Group to bring the expertise of Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital to the University Hospital Centre in Tirana.

The project includes the construction of a private hospital offering a wide range of high-quality services and the establishment of the Vita-Salute medical university, one of Europe’s leading institutions in the field.

“Things are moving in the right direction. The potential is considerable, and the path is now much clearer for a greater Italian business presence in the near future,” Rama said.

He also noted that one of the largest Italy-linked investments concerns a planned Italy-Albania energy interconnection, developed in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates, which aims to expand Albania’s green-energy production capacity.

“We will begin this process soon as the first stage of the project is nearing completion. We are also in discussions to establish a state-of-the-art data centre,” Rama added.
