TIRANA, June 8 /ATA/ – No cases of Indian variant of the coronavirus have been found yet in Albania, experts at Public Health Institute said on Tuesday.

Health experts said that situation is being kept under control and lab tests have detected no cases of the Indian variant of the coronavirus in Albania despite suspicions.

Iris Hasibra, head of the laboratory at the Public Health Institute told reporters “the suspicious epidemiological cases have been recorded, but there are no indicators showing presence of this mutation in our country.”

“The Indian variant of the virus is highly contagious and transmissible. It is believed to be 50 % more contagious than the British variant, which itself is 50 to 100 % more contagious than the original variant of the novel coronavirus,” she said.

In terms of its symptoms, the Indian variant is almost similar to seasonal flu viruses.

Experts think that even this variant can be deterred by current COVID-19 vaccines, but no accurate data are currently available. Meanwhile, health authorities in North Macedonia confirmed the first case of the Indian mutation or otherwise known as the Delta Covid variant a day ago.
