The agricultural land area under irrigation has doubled to over 240.000 hectares from around 120.000 hectares just few years ago.

According to the budget monitoring report for the period from January to April 2023 drafted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, investment projects on upgrading and building drainage and irrigation infrastructure account for an important part of the Ministry projects.

An amount of over 550 million lek has been set aside to support investment projects on maintenance of  the irrigation infrastructure and make irrigation canals all over the country operational.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared images showing the ongoing work to support local farmers in the village of Kallm i Madh in the municipality of Fier, southern Albania, to rehabilitate the irrigation and drainage systems there, adding that work is underway also in many other villages and rural areas in this region.

The rehabilitation of the drainage and irrigation system is seen as the best possible investment to renew and help agriculture and the country’s economy to recover.

Full rehabilitation of the irrigation and drainage canals continues in the entire Myzeqe area known as the breadbasket of Albania’s agriculture due its fertile lands, hard-working farmers and huge development potential.
