TIRANA, Jan 21 /ATA/ The Albanian government’s new laboratory complex at the Institute of Public Health is set to triple the institution’s laboratory capacity, adhering to EU biosafety standards.
The new complex spans 2,900 square meters and consists of five levels, including one underground floor and four above ground. It is designed to handle high-risk biological agents with advanced safety protocols to protect the health of the specialists working there.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Evis Sala, along with the Director of the Institute of Public Health (IPH), Dorina Çanaku, conducted an inspection of the new laboratory facilities at the IPH.

The new National Reference Laboratory complex, a key national investment, is set to begin operations this year and will establish one of the most advanced laboratory capacities in the region.
The Director of the IPH stated that the complex offers advanced technology and two high-level biosafety laboratories, which strengthen diagnostics, scientific research, and the country’s preparedness for any health emergency.
“This laboratory will serve as a national center for reference, expertise, and scientific research in the field of public health. It is an investment by the Albanian government, supported by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, and will contribute to improving the prevention, early detection, and control of infectious diseases,” said Çanaku.
According to Çanaku, the new facility will feature two high-level biosafety laboratories, providing a secure environment for the staff. In comparison, the existing building of the Institute of Public Health currently only accommodates a level two laboratory.

The new facility will also include specialized laboratories for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), molecular biology, microbiology, food safety, and environmental monitoring, all aimed at supporting national screening programs and strengthening the country’s health security.
The increase in the laboratory capacity of the Institute of Public Health has a direct and highly significant impact on public health. The number of tests conducted annually could exceed 30,000-35,000 examinations during normal/quiet periods.

With this new laboratory facility, the Institute of Public Health takes a significant step forward in enhancing its diagnostic and research capabilities at the national level, strengthening its role as a key reference point for protecting public health and responding promptly to any situation that threatens the country’s health security.
