TIRANA, June 4 /ATA – By Maela Marini/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Thursday that the Porto Montenegro marina project, now a flagship tourism investment in Montenegro, was originally planned for the coastal city of Durrës but was relocated after the Canadian investor left Albania.

Rama, who is in Montenegro to attend the EU-Western Balkans summit in Tivat, made the remarks during a visit to the Porto Montenegro resort, describing it as a key driver of economic transformation in the neighboring country.

“This was supposed to happen in Durrës, but the Canadian investor was forced to leave,” Rama said, referring to the project’s initial plans in Albania.

The Prime Minister said the investor had been discouraged during the early stages of engagement in Albania and ultimately moved the project across the border, where it became one of Montenegro’s most prominent luxury marina developments.

Rama said his visit to Porto Montenegro was coincidental but noted that he had been referring to the project in recent days while in the region.

He said the development was made possible after the investor was welcomed by the Montenegrin government, although he added that the project did not progress smoothly at first.

“In Montenegro, the doors were opened by the government, but not everything went as it looks today from the outside,” he said.

Rama described Porto Montenegro as a landmark investment that helped raise Montenegro’s international profile as a tourism destination and said it was now being showcased during the EU–Western Balkans summit hosted in Tivat.

The Prime Minister also said the investor had originally attempted to develop a similar marina project in Albania but did not receive the necessary support at the time.
