TIRANA, Oct 31 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said on Friday that citizens’ voices and energy would respond to Parliament’s rejection of requests to establish two investigative committees.

Speaking at a DP parliamentary group meeting, Berisha said his party had acted in line with the Constitution in seeking establishment of parliamentary committees.

“The opposition’s main mission is oversight. That is its core role. An opposition that does not exercise oversight is not an opposition – it is a pseudo-opposition,” Berisha stated.

He added that “now is a historic moment to stand by the Albanian people and their violated will,” describing the forthcoming efforts as a process to “amplify citizens’ voices against this regime.”

Berisha also accused Socialist lawmakers of being willing “to sacrifice Parliament” to silence the opposition.

TIRANA, Jan 18 /ATA/ – The Democratic Party chairman Lulzim Basha described the legal amendments to the parliamentary investigative committees as manoeuvres by Prime Minister Edi Rama to prevent government transparency and accountability.

In a statement via the social media, Basha claimed that Rama was seeking to deny opposition the right to hold the government accountable.

“He who doesn’t have anything to hide has no reason to fear transparency. Edi Rama’s manoeuvres to deny opposition the right to the government transparency and accountability over the corruption affairs through the investigative committees show his fear from the truth. But the transparency over the corruption affairs of today’s government, which is impoverishing and forcing Albanians to leave the country, will be definitely done,” Basha said.

“The era of impunity is close to its end and Edi Rama’s votes in parliament won’t stop it,” he concluded.

President Bajram Begaj today decreed the law on parliamentary investigative committees today, which has recently turned into the main cause for the opposition’s disrupting actions in parliament. The law in question includes proposals made by the Socialist Party on parliamentary inquiry committees and which was voted in parliament in December 2023.
