TIRANA, June 11 /ATA/ – The 51st INTERPOL European Regional Conference began in Tirana on Tuesday.

The three-day conference brought together senior police officials from more than 50 countries to examine the region’s major crime threats including drug trafficking, organized crime and cyber-enabled crime.

The Minister of Interior Taulant Balla said in his opening remarks that more than 10 million tourists visited Albania in 2023 and no incidents or grave crimes involving foreign visitors were recorded.

The Interior Minister underlined that Albania has been transformed in the past few years.

“It is the first time that Albania hosts such an INTERPOL conference. The country hosted the EU Summit several months ago. Today’s guests might have visited Albania 10, 20 or even 30 years ago and they are certainly impressed by Tirana’s and whole Albania’s huge transformation and development,” Balla said.

Interior Minister also highlighted the timeliness and importance of the event in combating transnational crime.

“Albania remains strongly committed in the fight against organized crime, against corruption, against narcotics,” he stated.
