The news was announced during a meeting held in Nice between the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, and UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, a strong supporter of Albania and its efforts to protect cultural and natural heritage.
Minister Kumbaro stated, “Audrey Azoulay is a valued friend of Albania with whom we have had excellent cooperation in the field of culture. Now, we are celebrating another shared milestone: the inscription of the Vjosa River on UNESCO’s heritage list, as a symbol of harmony between nature and mankind.”
Kumbaro added that the official decision regarding the inscription of the Vjosa River is expected in September, which will recognize this unique natural area as a site of the World Heritage.
This will be an important step not only for Albania but for the entire region, reinforcing the status of the Vjosa National Park as the first of its kind in Europe.
The Vjosa River, known as Europe’s “last wild river,” flows 270 kilometers untamed from the Pindus Mountains in Greece (where it’s called Aoos) to the Adriatic Sea in Albania. This free-flowing river is a significant natural asset and has been designated as a national park to protect it from development.
The Vjosa Valley is a unique ecosystem that includes diverse habitats such as forests, sandy islands, and agricultural lands. It is home to more than 1,100 vegetation and animal species, including endangered species like otters, Dalmatian pelicans, and endemic fish. It also serves as a migration corridor for many birds and is an important area for European biodiversity.
