TIRANA, Sept 5 /ATA/- Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha announced Friday that his main opposition party will push for creation of a parliamentary commission to investigate alleged irregularities in Albania’s May 11 elections, which he described as an “electoral farce.”

Speaking at a press conference, Berisha said it is the party’s “absolute duty” to document and verify all serious legal violations and mechanisms that undermined the electoral process.

“Failure to do so would amount to complicity in a monstrous electoral crime,” he added.

Berisha also confirmed that the first parliamentary investigative commission to be established will focus on what he termed the “electoral farce.”

The announcement follows the Election College’s decision a day ago to reject the Democratic Party’s appeal against the May 11 parliamentary results. The party had sought to annul the outcome, citing irregularities and serious legal violations. The ruling effectively closes the legal challenge to the election results.

The first meeting took place in the premises of the Assembly under the chairmanship of Alket Hyseni and Deputy Parliament Speaker Myslim Murrizi, and Klotilda Bushka holding the position of secretary.

The Chairman of the Commission, Alket Hyseni touching on the preliminary plan of the investigation said that, the work of the members of the Commission will be based only on laws and the Constitution, beyond politics.

“Consultants of the experts will assist us in doctrine, Courts’ jurisprudence or European matters. We will hold a hearing with the President of the Republic. The final report will be approved, and then, it is up to the Assembly of the Republic of Albania to decide if there are reasons provided by the Constitution for a serious violation of the Constitution,” he added.

The members of the Commission of Inquiry are Alket Hyseni, Myslym Murrizi, Klotilda Bushka, Vasilika Hysi, Elena Xhina, Spartak Braho, Halil Jakimi, Nikolin Staka, Arlind Çarçani, Ermonela Felaj, Xhemal Qefalia and Eugen Bojaxhi. //a.i/
