This position was confirmed by Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi at the South-East Europe Defense Ministerial held in Skopje, North Macedonia.

Minister Peleshi underlined Albania’s support for the SEDM initiative and for the South East Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG), whose command is expected to be taken over by Albania in 2023.

“Regional initiatives are a great opportunity to increase interaction between the countries of our region and offer the opportunity to address at round tables the challenges facing us in the field of security and defence,” said Peleshi.

During the ministerial, Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi expressed the firm position in favour of the “Open Door Policy” principle for all regional initiatives and not only SEDM, which should include all Western Balkan countries, as of course Kosovo is.

This meeting, which brings together the Ministers of Defence, is held once a year and is a very good opportunity to take stock of the achievements, evaluate the joint plans and projects for the future of the oldest politico-military initiative of our region, such as SEDM.
