TIRANA, April 20 /ATA/ – A new molecular diagnostics laboratory at the University Obstetric-Gynaecological Hospital ‘Queen Geraldine’ marks a step forward in modern medical diagnostics, enabling earlier detection of a range of anomalies in infants, health authorities said.

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection said the facility applies genome-wide array analysis, allowing clinicians to identify multiple abnormalities in newborns with greater precision.

New premises, updated equipment and contemporary techniques represent another step towards a modern, higher-quality healthcare system that is closer to citizens, the ministry said.

Prof. Dr. Eliona Demaliaj, the hospital’s director, said the centre introduces advanced genome analysis using array-based technology, enabling deeper investigation at the genetic level.

“The Ministry’s support and funding made it possible to implement this technology,” Demaliaj said.

Prof. Dr. Merita Xhenomi said chromosomal microarray analysis can scan the genome and, beyond detecting anomalies, identify micro duplications linked to rare genetic syndromes.

The laboratory will complement existing advanced genetic testing used to identify chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome and Edwards syndrome, as well as monogenic conditions including thalassemia, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, she added.

Demaliaj said the molecular genetics centre would increasingly support the diagnosis of a wide range of conditions during and after pregnancy, including in infertile couples, adding that the team aimed to deliver higher-quality care for women, mothers and children.

The centre will serve as a national referral hub for genetic testing and laboratory developments in the field.

It comprises four dedicated work areas aligned with specific laboratory processes, including DNA extraction, PCR preparation, analysis of amplified DNA via agarose gel electrophoresis, and gene mutation analysis using DNA sequencing. A genetic counselling unit is also part of the facility.
