The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, hosted a reception at the Palace of Brigades, attended by representatives of Albanian communities from both within and outside the country.

In his remarks, Veliaj emphasized the importance of national unity and the wealth of traditions that unite Albanians.

“This is a moment that encapsulates our national unity and reflects the richness of our traditions. I am truly grateful and proud that the union of Albanian municipalities in the region is a union that connects Albanian-speaking cities of the Western Balkans and plays an extraordinarily key and irreplaceable role in realizing this European vision of cities and communities of Albanians and, at the same time, Europeans. Our cities are a mirror image of our history, a rich history, and through these activities, we aim to stimulate renewed interest in exploring and appreciating this unique heritage that we possess,” said Veliaj.

He praised the role of the Union of Albanian Municipalities in the region, describing it as a key platform for strengthening cooperation among Albanian-speaking cities. The Mayor emphasized that this cooperation transcends national borders and strengthens both national and European ties.

“It is this unity and collaboration that make us stronger and enable us to overcome shared challenges. So, on behalf of the Municipality of Tirana and the Union of Albanian Municipalities in the Region, I would like to express my gratitude for your presence and wish you all a Happy Independence Day. This November 28th, we, the Albanian people, celebrate the 112th anniversary of the Republic of Albania’s independence. It is one of those days when our hearts burst with pride, our spirits shine in red and black, and every Albanian’s mind resonates in unison, proudly declaring, ‘How wonderful it is to be Albanian.’ And what better way to celebrate Flag Day than together, here in Tirana,” said Veliaj.

The Mayor recalled historic moments from the journey toward independence, mentioning Ismail Qemali’s interviews on the eve of its declaration.

He recalled the words of the Elder of Vlora, emphasizing the significance of national unity and the importance of leaving behind religious and political differences.
