TIRANA, May 13 /ATA/ The high influx of foreign tourists who are choosing Albania as a tourist destination in recent years has highlighted the need for increasing accommodation capacities.

The government has called on young people and immigrants to return and invest their savings in their ancestral homes to convert them into small guesthouses as part of a tailored program launched by the state.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Monday shared images of the guesthouse of Lulzim Hupi, a former immigrant in Greece, who has returned to his roots in Bulqiza, where with the support of the state he has revitalized the “Hupi Turret.”

“A stone is heavy on its own turf. After six years as an immigrant in Greece, Lulzim Hupi returned a few years ago to his roots in Bulqiza, where the house of his grandparents lied in ruins and where, with his mind and muscles strengthened in emigration, the savings of uneaten meals, as well as the state subsidy he revitalized the “Hupi Turret,” which now brings the work to his doorstep there in the mountains and the fresh air, together with visitors from Albania, Greeks, Italians, English and other foreigners who book rooms and enjoy the local food, becoming the source of much more income from tourism at his home than from working for others in emigration,” Rama said in his social media account.

From Athens, where yesterday he met with Albanians living and working in Greece, Prime Minister Edi Rama, while repeating the invitation for immigrants to return to Albania, announced the launch of a tailored program for all Albanian immigrants who want to invest their savings in villages and mountainous areas of Albania.

“We are currently drawing up a tailored program for all Albanian immigrants who want to invest their savings in the villages and mountainous areas of Albania, to convert the houses and lands there into links of our new tourism chain, ” Rama said.
Albania was visited last year by 10.1 million foreign tourists, while the authorities in the country say that more than 14 million foreign tourists are expected to come this year.
