TIRANA, May 2 /ATA/ Chairman of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha stated today that during the proceedings of the International Democracy Union (IDU) forum in Zagreb there was approved a resolution on Albania.

In his weekly communication with citizens through social networks, Berisha said that, “The agenda of the right wing organization carries Albania because of the major problems it presents and due to the serious setbacks, the regression of democracy and its standards.

According to him, “The international community is becoming more and more aware that in Albania there is installed a dangerous regime not only for Albanian citizens, but also for the region and beyond”.

Berisha stressed that, “The resolution condemns the continuous obstruction of prosecution in fighting high level corruption and the massive abuses in public procurement, while the socialist ruling majority defends the lack of accountability”.

“The resolution underlines that investigations involving ministers and senior officials at all levels confirm the systemic corruption that is slowing down EU integration of the country. The resolution also supports Albania’s integration into the European Union on the basis of merit, without overlooking any criteria,” Berisha added.

Berisha also emphasized that through this resolution, the IDU affirms that there can be no progress towards the European Union without free elections, the rule of law and pluralism. /m.m/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, April 29 /ATA/ Chairman of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha is in Zagreb to attend the forum of the International Democratic Union (IDU), an international alliance of centre-right to right-wing political parties.

In a statement to the media from Zagreb, Berisha said that the opposition will present to international partners its concerns regarding what he described as electoral autocracy in Albania and the obstacles to the European integration process.

Berisha stressed that the issues that will be raised are related to regional security, the integration process into the European Union, as well as the economic situation in the country.

According to him, Albania is facing serious problems that, in the opposition’s view, are related to the influence of organized crime on the economy and decision-making, as well as the weakening of the productive sectors.

On the sidelines of the IDU forum, Berisha has held meetings with several international personalities, including senior representatives of the participating countries and leaders of the organization and has discussed on the political situation in Albania and developments in the Balkan region. /m.q/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, May 16/ATA/ Chairman of the Democratic Party in opposition Sali Berisha stated today at the IDU (International Democracy Union) summit in Brussels that, “The elections of May 11, 2025 in Albania were a clear, foretold farce, a massive farce, foreseen in the IDU resolution, in the EPP resolution, in the CDI resolutions and in other international stance”.

These elections, he emphasized, “were held in a climate of unprecedented political terror where the prime minister put in prison, under house arrest or under criminal prosecution, three leaders of the main opposition parties, stripped the mayors of their mandates and imprisoned opposition MPs”.

Secondly, Berisha added, “As a narco-state, Albania became a tool of criminal organizations that were widely used to get votes for the prime minister.”

According to Berisha, public financial means were used to buy votes.

“Specifically, every pensioner was given 100 euros as a “gift” in the middle of the election campaign, as a gift from the prime minister. But, ladies and gentlemen, pensioners today make up 48% of the electorate in Albania, after about 600,000 young people left the country in 10 years,” he said.

Also, Berisha emphasized, “Two days before the elections, the prime minister announced an amnesty for all fines amounting over 200 million euros.”

“During the campaign, the prime minister granted 138 licenses for the planting of tens of thousands of cannabis roots, where one root in Albania is worth about 1,000 euros, i.e. used the drug for votes. Also, massive hiring was done in the central, local administration and public enterprises for electoral purposes. He financed with 7 million euros a private organization for the Giro d’Italia event, which was held on election day and the day before, simply as propaganda. Complete control was exercised over the four national media organs. He banned TikTok,” Berisha said.

“We are grateful that these actions have been reflected by international observers such as the OSCE, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, who issued a very serious report. President, the elections were a farce. If we do not restore the right of vote to Albanians, the country is disappearing. According to Eurostat, in the last 10 years, over 1,099,000 Albanians have left the country for the European Union,” Berisha said.

“Thank you once again for the very valuable support you have shown. I again ask for support from governments, from the IDU, EPP, CDI and the governments in power so that my nation can vote freely. Of course, we will make every effort, but international solidarity is crucial to win,” Berisha concluded. /j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, May 15 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha stated Thursday that the member parties of the International Democracy Union (IDU) fully support efforts of the Albanian opposition to safeguard and restore free and fair elections in the country.

In an interview on the sidelines of the IDU world forum, Berisha said he travelled urgently to Brussels to denounce the electoral farce of May 11 and to defend the Albanians’ vote.

“The IDU world forum is being held in Brussels. The event takes place twice a year, in Washington and in Brussels. I travelled to Brussels urgently to defend the Albanians’ vote and outline before the audience and international personalities the shameful electoral farce on May 11. The IDU resolution during Washington Forum in December had anticipated all what happened on May 11,” Berisha said.

Berisha said that he discussed the latest developments in Albania with the IDU President Stefan Harper and other European and international personalities.

Opposition leader Sali Berisha said that the DP had documented irregularities and manipulations in real time, and as soon as the complaints process is completed, it will submit the final report to the main Western governments.

Berisha added that the opposition was also requesting a hearing in the US Congress to present evidence of the installation of the narco-state.

He stated that the opposition will continue the battle for a free vote.

Regarding the ban on tomorrow’s protest by the State Police, Berisha said that the decision was unconstitutional and the protest will be held.

TIRANA, Dec 7 /ATA/ – Chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) Sali Berisha announced Saturday that another resolution had been recently approved by the International Democratic Union (IDU), which, according to him, “expresses support for DP and the Albanian opposition.”

“The International Democratic Union, the organization that brings together over 80-centre right parties and is de facto lead by the Republican Party of the United States of America, has unanimously adopted a resolution on the situation in Albania, comparing it with authoritarian regimes like Belarus and Tunisia, where the power is concentrated in one hand, reducing elections to a facade, and where the opposition, its leaders and exponents face political persecution, imprisonment, and threats, mirroring authoritarian regimes like Belarus and Tunisia,” Berisha stated.

According to Berisha, IDU condemns all these actions and “condemns imprisonment and political processes against the opposition leaders and exponents.”

DP leader also said that the IDU resolution called for “an impartial judiciary free from political interference, because a judiciary totally controlled by the ruling Socialist Party is unacceptable for the international standard.”

According to him, IDU demanded that “a caretaker government is established to ensure free and fair elections.”

“In less than one month, the international community has rendered incredible support for DP and opposition. The DP and Albanian opposition diplomacy has turned out to be the most successful in history of opposition in Albania,” he stated.
