TIRANA, Feb 5 /ATA/ -Albanian government has approved a normative act on extension of the validity of expired identity cards to make sure that citizens can vote in the upcoming local elections on May 11.

The Council of Minister’s decision states that ID cards expired before the election day, May 11, are valid until May 31, 2025.

In a press statement after a regular cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the Minister of Interior Ervin Hoxha said that the decision would resolve a bureaucratic hurdle affecting around 500,000 people whose ID cards have expired.

“The Council of Ministers approved a very important normative act on extension of the validity of expired IDs and biometric passports. The move will soon resolve the deadlock, as around 500 000 Albanian citizens have their ID cards expired. With the approval of this act, all Albanian citizens will be able to cast their ballot according to the instructions of the Central Election Commission, registering via the electronic platform,” Interior Minister Hoxha said.

Responding to the Democratic Party’s request to allow Albanian expats vote in parliamentary elections with biometric documents of the host countries, Interior Minister clarified that Albanians living abroad without a valid national identification document would not be eligible to vote.
