TIRANA, Jan 23 /ATA/ – Albanian government will extend the validity of expired ID cards in order to enable Albanian citizens living and working abroad to vote in the May 11 parliamentary elections in the country, the Socialist Party’s Secretary for Organizational and Electoral Affairs, Damian Gjiknuri, announced in a televised interview on Thursday.

A request to extend validity of the expired identification documents for the Albanian expats was forwarded by the State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi a few days ago.

Gjiknuri also said that the ruling Socialist Party and the main opposition Democratic Party had agreed on three elements of the Electoral Code only and dismissed a DP proposal to allow Albanian citizens, who hole foreign IDs and biometric documents, to cast their vote in the upcoming general elections.

“We won’t accept foreign ID holders to vote, if they lack an Albanian ID document,” the Socialist lawmaker stated.

According to him, the DP request was “absurd and an alibi for their defeat in the upcoming elections.”

TIRANA, March 18 /ATA/ – The Director General of the Civil Registry Office Bledar Doracaj on Thursday called on leaders of the political parties to set a personal for the citizens by applying to renew their expired biometric documents.

“I avail myself of the opportunity to urge first and foremost the political representatives and leaders of political parties, who have yet to deliver on a legal obligation by applying to renew their biometric passports and ID cards that have expired almost two years ago,” Doracaj said in a televised interview.

Doracaj also confirmed that ways are being explored to postpone expiration date of the identification documents until April 30.

“I know and I have been informed that respective legal initiatives have been undertaken to further extend the validity of the expired ID cards and passports. The process is already underway and this is the third time when validity of documents is extended. We have taken the initiative to extend validity until end of April,” Doracaj said.
