TIRANA, Sept 11 /ATA/ – “Albania has met European Union membership criteria and fully deserves to start EU accession process,” the visiting Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated at a press conference in Tirana on Wednesday.

Addressing a joint press conference with the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó announced that Hungary will host two high-level meetings between Albania and the EU member states this year to discuss accession negotiation clusters and the steps towards opening the three first chapters regarding Albania’s EU membership.

“Any further delay would go against all of us and the EU and this would hurt the EU credibility and its all member states. To this end, we think that it is our goal to open the three first chapters of Albania’s EU accession negotiations,” Szijjártó.

Foreign Minister Szijjártó said that “not every EU member is happy with Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union, as Europe is going through challenging situations.”

“Europe’s commercial capacity has declined recently and Hungary thinks that the best remedy for this disease that has affected Europe recently is precisely its enlargement towards the Western Balkan countries,” Szijjártó said.

Szijjártó said that he and Albanian counterpart Hasani discussed the robust Albania-Hungary political ties, expanding economic cooperation and the shared commitment to enhancing interaction on international issues.
