TIRANA, Aug 1 /ATA/ Albania has achieved a significant milestone in the Human Development Index (HDI), moving up to the “Very High Human Development” category for the first time, according to the latest report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Albania’s HDI value for 2023 is 0.810, placing the country from “High human development” in the “Very High human development” category and positioning it at 71 out of 193 countries and territories. The Gender Development Index (GDI) for Albania shows a female HDI value of 0.794 and a male HDI value of 0.824, resulting in a GDI value of 0.963, placing it into Group 2. The Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) reveals a loss of 12.96 percent due to inequality, lowering the HDI to 0.705. The Gender Inequality Index (GII) ranks Albania 35 out of 172 countries with a value of 0.107.

Instead of seeing sustained recovery following the period of exceptional crises of 2020-2021, the report reveals unexpectedly weak progress even in Europe and Central Asia, where the HDI (0.818) remains above the global average (0.756). Excluding those crisis years, the meagre rise in global human development projected in this year’s report is the smallest increase since 1990.

60% believe that AI will have a positive impact on employment by creating new roles that do not exist today.
Only 13% express fear of job loss due to AI.
In low- and middle-income countries, 70% expect AI to boost productivity, and two-thirds plan to use it in education, healthcare, or work within a year.

The 2025 Human Development Report -“A matter of choice: people and possibilities in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI)” analyses development progress across a range of indicators known as the Human Development Index (HDI), which encompasses achievements in health and education, along with levels of income. Projections for 2024 reveal stalled progress on the HDI in all regions across the world.

In the face of this new global reality, Albania’s challenge lies in directing development policies toward the digital age, sustaining progress in living standards, and smartly incorporating AI to benefit its citizens.
