TIRANA, January 17/ATA/ For the first time in Albania, boys have been included in the national vaccination program against HPV (human papillomavirus), a common infection spread through sex. This marks an important step in the policies of preventing infectious and oncological diseases.

In an interview for ATA Rovena Daja stated that HPV infection is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract and causes a number of diseases and conditions in both females and males, including precancerous lesions, which can develop into cancer.

“Vaccination of the males significantly reduces the transmission of the virus in the population. By reducing the circulation of HPV, sexual partners are also protected and contributes to the creation of immunity in the population. Vaccination of females alone is not sufficient to completely curb the spread of the virus, especially in populations with high mobility and diverse sexual behaviors,” Daja emphasized.

Daja said that, “According to data recorded in the Vaccination Information System (SIV), 16 13-year-old boys have already received doses of the HPV vaccine nationally. It is expected that the number of vaccinations will increase progressively in the future, in parallel with more information, awareness of parents and the active involvement of health professionals in the community.”

“The vaccine is safe, widely studied and has been used for years in many countries around the world,” concluded Daja.

According to official data from the Health Care Services Operator, during 2025, there were administered around 9,363 HPV vaccines throughout the country, while since January of this year, vaccination has also begun for the first time even for boys. /e.i/r.e/a.f/p.s./

“In the first phase of vaccination against HPV, we managed to vaccinate over 2300 girls in the 13-year old age group.

TIRANA, October 22/ATA/ In context of activities of the Pink October, the month of awareness against breast cancer, there was organized the “Pink-Talk”, an activity of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection with participation of Health Minister Ogerta Manastirliu, women who have won the battle with breast cancer, doctors, and experts in various fields.

During her speech, Manastirliu gave the good news that starting from November 1, the HPV vaccine will be included in the national vaccination calendar.

“I am happy to say that starting on November 1, for the first time, we in Albania shall include the human papillomavirus vaccine in our vaccination calendar. We have worked a long time to get it here and the fact that such an effective vaccine is available and we are now able to vaccinate our girls and guarantee that up to 100% that they will not get cervical cancer, this is certainly a victory, a victory of science, but also our victory that we bring in this daily battle against the disease and precisely against the cervical tumor”, said Manastirliu.

Speaking to the audience, Minister Manastirliu said that thanks to investments in regional hospitals and mobile mammograms, we have managed to get 20,000 women a year to have mammograms for free./k.s/p.s./
