HPP Skavica is the fourth part of the Drini cascade which increases energy security, increases production capacity and ensures flood protection, contributes significantly to the transformation of Albania into a net exporter of electricity.

In the framework of the Memorandum of Economic Cooperation for Projects and Purchases, between the Albanian government and the US government, in early October 2020, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku and the representative of the company “Bechtel” Justin Siberell, president of Europe and the Middle East region, in the presence of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the United States Under Secretary of State for Economic Development, Energy and Environment Keith Krach, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in relation to the Skavica HPP Project.

The signed document emphasizes the importance of the HPP Skavica Project, as a project of national interest, which will enable Albania to establish full independence from energy imports and will position our country as an energy center for the region.

Minister Balluku said to the Committee that Skavica hydropower plant is one of the most important investments in the Albanian hydropower sector.

“Skavica will have a special importance not only for energy production, but for the optimization it makes to the Drini cascade, increasing the production capacity of the three existing HPPs in the cascade and solving once and for all the problem of floods in the field of NënShkodra “, stated the minister.

The contract is divided into two phases and will be signed by the Albanian Power Corporation in the capacity of contracting authority while the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy will assist the whole process.

According to KESH, the three HPPs on the Drini cascade are carrying out discharges, while discharges via the gates are being carried out only from Vau i Dejës.

Discharges from production and discharge gates are: Fierza HPP – 490 m3 / s from production, 0 m3 / s discharges from gates, Koman HPP – 517 m3 / s from production, 0 m3 / s discharges from gates and in Vau Dejës HPP – 440 m3 / s from production, 100 m3 / s discharges from gates.

KESH informs that the lake levels of the Drini Cascade are: Fierza HPP 294.23 m from max. Quota of 296; Koman HPP 173.02 m from max. Quota of 175.5 m and Vau i Dejës HPP 73.97 m from max. Quota of 76 m).

Regarding the production in the three HPPs, KESH informs that in Fierza HPP it is is 10,650 MWh (daily), in Koman HPP it is 9,939 MWh (daily) and in Vau Dejës HPP, 4,320 MWh (daily).

Total production meets the demand for electricity consumption in the country.
