TIRANA, Oct 7 /ATA/ – Albanian households increased their monthly consumer spending by 1.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the latest Household Budget Survey published Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT).

Average monthly consumption spending was estimated at 93,042 lek per household, which typically consists of 3.1 members. Total household consumption across the country amounted to around 70.4 billion lek.

The highest growth was recorded in the category “furnishings and routine household maintenance,” up 5.7%, followed by “transport” with 5.2% and “clothing and footwear” with 4.4%.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages continued to dominate household budgets, averaging 36,879 lek per month – or 39.6% of total spending. Within this group, families spent the most on vegetables (19.4%), meat and meat products (18.9%), and bread and cereals (15.4%).

Housing, water, electricity, and rent accounted for 9.6% of household budgets, averaging 8,944 lek monthly, while spending on “restaurants and hotels” made up 7.6% at 7,031 lek.

INSTAT noted that higher spending on furnishings reflected purchases of small home appliances such as coffee makers and toasters, as well as minor household repairs. Expenditure on restaurants and hotels rose by 4.1%, driven by higher accommodation and hospitality costs.

Spending on “recreation and culture” also increased by 1.7%, suggesting growing interest among households in travel and leisure packages both domestically and abroad.

By region, Tirana recorded the highest average monthly spending at 108,588 lek, followed by Korça (91,418 lek) and Durrës (90,218 lek). The lowest levels were observed in Kukës (75,048 lek) and Dibër (75,883 lek).
