TIRANA, October 31 /ATSH/ – The first four scheduled surgical procedures have been performed at Mirdita Municipal Hospital, in collaboration with the University Trauma Hospital.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare Klodiana Spahiu gave the news emphasizing that, “This is a concrete step in implementing the Ministry’s policies for the decentralization of healthcare—bringing specialized treatment closer to citizens and reducing the patient influx toward university hospitals in Tirana.”

According to Spahiu, the mentorship model strengthens the capacities of regional and municipal hospitals, while the expertise of specialized medical teams is leveraged to address the needs of the public.

“A more balanced healthcare system means stronger local hospitals, easier access for citizens and a reduced burden on hospital centers in Tirana,” said Spahiu. The implementation of the first four interventions at Mirdita Municipal Hospital is part of an effort to expand the reach of health services and create a more balanced system, in which municipal and regional hospitals play a greater role in providing medical care.

This model also aims to reduce the flow of patients toward university hospitals in Tirana, thereby easing their burden while simultaneously improving citizens’ access to healthcare services.

Strengthening local hospitals and fostering collaboration with university medical centers represent a key policy direction for the Ministry of Health, aimed at decentralizing services and improving the delivery of healthcare across the country. /k.s/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, August 14 /ATA/ The Imaging Service at ‘Shefqet Ndroqi’ University Hospital in Tirana delivers high-quality diagnostics by pairing advanced technology with an experienced medical team.

According to the Head of the Imaging Service, Dr. Ermira Hysa, the department provides digital radiography, a full suite of ultrasound examinations, and computed tomography (CT).

‘We currently operate two CT scanners to perform these diagnostic procedures,’ Hysa stated.”

Nuclear medicine uses a gamma camera for imaging tests like thyroid, lung, kidney, and bone scans. Soon, the imaging department will add a new MRI machine to improve patient diagnosis, added Hysa.

Scintigraphy is a key diagnostic test that evaluates organ and tissue function, guiding patient treatment and follow-up.

According to Dr. Hysa, the “Shefqet Ndroqi” University Hospital imaging service will soon add magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

This upgrade expands their diagnostic capabilities, offering a more precise and comprehensive health assessment.

TIRANA, June 30/ATA/ For the first time in Albania, doctors at “Shefqet Ndroqi” University Hospital have successfully used ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) therapy on a 63-year-old patient.

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare reported that ECMO is used when a patient’s heart and lungs are severely diseased or damaged and need time to rest and heal. While ECMO itself does not cure disease, it provides critical time for the body to recover or serves as a bridge while waiting for a heart or lung transplant.

According to the ministry, “This therapy significantly strengthens Albania’s capacity to treat critical cardiopulmonary conditions, marking a major milestone in the country’s intensive care capabilities”.

The procedure was performed by the team of doctors composed by Albi Fagu, Ketion Menkshi, Dervish Hasi, Marjeta Bilaj and Nereisa Rushiti and the support staff of nurses.

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs considers that this achievement represents an important moment for Albanian medicine, opening a new chapter in the treatment of more complex cases and increasing the possibilities for saving lives through modern intensive care technologies. /e.i/a.f/p.s./
