TIRANA, April 29 /ATA/ – The Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with the National Agency of Protected Areas, has launched a nationwide programme aimed at strengthening environmental protection and improving the maintenance of hiking trails across Albania.

The initiative, titled “Clean Trails, Protected Forests,” is designed to promote environmental stewardship and reduce risks such as wildfires through broader public engagement and awareness-raising activities.

Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj said the programme responds to the need for wider civic involvement in protecting natural areas, noting that reliance on protected area specialists alone is not sufficient to ensure long-term conservation.

He said the campaign combines awareness efforts with practical action on the ground, including trail cleaning and maintenance activities involving students nationwide.

Pupils across Albania will take part through educational programmes and outdoor excursions, contributing directly to the upkeep of hiking routes, he added.

Jaupaj described the initiative as a call for responsibility, cooperation and greater appreciation of nature.

The programme aims to foster a new culture of collaboration between institutions and citizens, positioning environmental protection as a shared national priority.

In recent years, hiking trails in Albania have become increasingly popular among domestic and foreign visitors, driven by growing interest in nature tourism, adventure and outdoor exploration.

Authorities say this rising demand has also highlighted the need for improved maintenance and protection of natural areas to ensure sustainable tourism development.
