TIRANA, Oct 18 /ATA/ The Speaker of the Assembly of Albania, Elisa Spiropali, held her first meeting in this role with the rectors of universities in the country. In her remarks, Spiropali emphasized the role of education and the need to come up with innovative ways for financing and strengthening the links between the public and private sectors.

In his remarks at the meeting, Rector Artan Hoxha stated, “This dialogue is important because it demonstrates the interest and concern for the smooth functioning of higher education institutions, as well as their significance in the development of society. We are at an important moment, such as the opening of negotiations, which involves all state structures, including the educational ones.”

“Not only in this process, which is very important for the future of Albania—seeing itself as an integrated part of the EU—but also as an ongoing effort that must transform all sectors to be part of the European family based on merit, not as a gift. Higher education is our responsibility. We have been in dialogue with the government about the needs and issues facing higher education, with the draft law on science being one of them. Overall, we do not have separate activities. Integration goes through the doors of pre-university and university education, and the role we play makes us aware of the need to move up to speed.”

Meanwhile, Professor Et’hem Ruka emphasized the importance of internationalizing students and welcoming foreign students to our country.

“There were institutions that distorted Higher Education and the diploma system; some issues were resolved administratively and others through accreditation. The law on Higher Education was necessary to regulate the education level. It’s time for many things to be reviewed. We have taken the first steps towards internationalization, and the agenda that the government has set for itself—namely, Albania 2030—requires universities to move forward. The internationalization of students, specifically the admission of foreign students here, should be a standard. The issue of visas remains a setback so we need to be more proactive in finding solutions,” Ruka stated.
