TIRANA, Aug 22 /ATA/ – Bilingual Albanian-English information signs and signposts are being installed to point to tourist attractions and cultural heritage sites in the southwestern Albanian museum city of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Head of the Regional Directorate of the National Culture in Berat, Eugen Kallfani told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) on Sunday that “introduction of the information signs to mark the city’s historical and architectural sites is one of the most important projects designed to boost cultural tourism in the museum city.”

This way – Kallfani added – visitors will be provided with valuable information on the city’s history, cultural heritage sites and main tourist attractions.

The city is home to over 486 cultural heritage monuments and remains an important tourist destination that attracts local visitors and international tourists from all over the world interested in history, ancient and medieval architecture.

Berat, or as it is known as the City of Thousand Windows, is a charming UNESCO town full of Ottoman-era houses, impressive fortress structures, and mystical churches and mosques, located on the side of the hills and mountains that sandwiched the Osum River.

The city bears witness to the coexistence of various religious and cultural communities down the centuries. It features a castle, locally known as the Kala, most of which was built in the 13th century, although its origins date back to the 4th century BC. The citadel area numbers many Byzantine churches, mainly from the 13th century, as well as several mosques built under the Ottoman era which began in 1417.

Berat is becoming a preferred destination for adventure tourism. Adventure travelers from all over Europe have been discovering the Osum River and its canyon, offering rafting and kayaking opportunities as well as many other outdoor sports such as climbing and trekking as well as mountain biking.

In addition to the unique Osumi River and Canyon, Berat also boasts Mount Tomorr, a site of pilgrimage for Bektashi believers that is also becoming popular for religious tourism.
