TIRANA, Oct 29 /ATA/ – A total of 177,431 elderly patients with cardiovascular disease across Albania have received reimbursed medicines for free since beginning of the year, the Minister of Health and Social Protection Albana Koçiu said on Tuesday.

“In the last nine months, 177,431 elderly people with heart conditions have benefited reimbursed medicines for free. This is an important step towards supporting the health of this category, easing the financial burden for their ongoing treatment and improving the quality of life,” Health Minister said in a post on the social media.

Koçiu underlined that around 50% of health budget has been used to cover the medicine reimbursement scheme since beginning of 2024.

“From January through September 2024, around 50% of the state budget for health sector covers the medicine reimbursement scheme for the elderly, providing them full access to needed medicines without burden costs,” she said.

The government decided to expand the medicine reimbursement scheme at a meeting in July to include high-cost and expensive drugs that are used to treat some of the most complex and serious diseases.

The current reimbursement list includes 1191 medicines following the government decision to include 50 more new medicines, out of which 38 are active ingredients, and 18 new doses.

According to her, the new drugs take the number of reimbursed medicines to 1345.
