TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ – Environmental degradation and climate change are having a growing impact on human health, experts said at an international public health and environment conference held in Tirana on Tuesday.

The two-day conference, hosted by the Albanian Academy of Sciences in partnership with George Mason University in the United States and Italy’s Ramazzini College, brought together researchers, public health specialists and institutional representatives from Albania and abroad.

Participants discussed the effects of environmental quality and climate change on public health, with speakers highlighting the links between air and water pollution, food safety, emerging infectious diseases and broader environmental challenges.

Vasil Tole, vice president of the Albanian Academy of Sciences, said issues such as air and water pollution, food security, climate change and emerging infectious diseases could no longer be treated as isolated problems and required coordinated responses from scientific institutions, policymakers and society.

Eugena Tomini, Albania’s deputy minister of health and social protection, said the environmental crisis and climate change were profoundly affecting human health, adding that a healthy environment could help prevent nearly one-quarter of the overall burden of disease.

Xheladin Draçini, rector of the University of Medicine in Tirana, said environmental change, urbanisation and social factors were exerting an increasingly significant influence on public health, while scientific research remained essential to developing evidence-based and sustainable solutions.

Speakers also stressed the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and the “One Health” approach, which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health.

The conference continued with presentations by Albanian and international researchers on recent developments in public health, environmental protection and occupational health, with discussions focusing on air, water and food quality, pollution and the health impacts of climate change.

TIRANA, June 5 /ATA/ With the start of the summer tourist season, the disinfestation process in wetland, urban and coastal areas throughout the country has continued, an important intervention for the protection of public health and ensuring a safer environment for citizens and vacationers.

Deputy Minister of Health and Social Welfare Eugena Tomini said that the process has begun in accordance with the national monitoring and control plan, aiming to reduce the density of mosquitoes in areas with the highest risk.

“Targeted disinfestation in urban and coastal regions is vital for Albania. It controls mosquito densities, protects public health, and supports the country’s booming tourism sector”, said Tomini.

According to her, these treatments eliminate mosquito larvae safely without harming people, pets or the environment.

“Harmless to land and aquatic life, this product ensures complete environmental safety”, emphasized Tomini.

Based on epidemiological and entomological mapping, the rollout is underway in urban and coastal zones of Shkodra, Lezha, Tirana, Durrës, Kavaja, Fier, and Vlora. /e.i/j.p/p.s./

TIRANA, May 6/ATA/ Pilgrims at St. Anthony’s Church can now access 24-hour medical care this March 13th! This new, summer health center will ensure continuous, 24/7 health services throughout the upcoming season.

During an inspection to the site, Minister of Health and Social Welfare Evis Sala credited growing religious tourism for increased visitor traffic, citing the expanded health services as a direct response. She added that the center provides round-the-clock care during the March pilgrimage to guarantee immediate, on-site support.

Minister Sala also spoke on building the capacity of medical personnel for summer health centers, highlighting the fact that in the last call there was a growing interest from doctors and nurses to serve in these centers during the summer season.

“It is a fact that out of 300 vacancies for medical and nursing personnel launched in the last call, there were recorded 700 applications. This is good news because it implies the dedication, increased interest, commitment, but also trust in the health employment portal”, said Minister Sala.

The Summer Health Center near the St. Anthony’s Church covers the needs for primary health care and light emergencies, as well as guaranteeing quick and professional assistance for pilgrims and tourists.

36 summer health centers will run 24/7 nationwide, ensuring accessible, quality care for visitors and residents throughout the tourist season. /e.i/a.f/p.s./
