TIRANA, Feb 10 /ATA/- Reacting to the Hague prosecutor’s request for 45-year sentences for former KLA leaders, Defence Minister Pirro Vengu said opposition to the request is driven by demands for impartial and historically grounded justice.

According to Vengu, extended pre-trial detention and the charges themselves have become a means of blurring the line between victim and aggressor, even as documented Serbian crimes against Kosovo Albanians go unpunished. He said efforts to place former KLA leaders on a par with those responsible for the Srebrenica genocide are grounded in allegedly fabricated charges and Russian influence within the Council of Europe.

He said the institutionalised injustice reopens historical wounds and undermines public trust in peace institutions. ‘In this way, international courts are delegitimising international law and the principle of self-determination of peoples,’ he added.
Vengu added that the future of Kosovo, Serbia and regional stability can be built only on credible, impartial and historically accountable justice — not on equating liberation fighters with perpetrators of genocide.
