TIRANA, April 17 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama, also the chairman of the Socialist Party, stated on Thursday that the Socialist Party aims to increase the number of women and girls participating in politics.

During a meeting held in Dibra with the women and girls of the area, Rama stated that the goal is for the number of women in the Socialist Party to overtake that of men.

“When we began this journey, women and girls made up just 15%, today that number has risen to 40%. And I want all of you, together with every woman and girl, to keep striving until the Socialist Party has more women than men. Our goal is to reach 50,000 women and girls in the SP, and we won’t stop until we get there,” he stated.

Rama also emphasized that the leadership of the two municipalities in the Dibra district, Bulqiza and Mati, by two women was the right choice.
According to him, today these two municipalities, under the leadership of these two women, have been transformed beyond recognition.

The leader of the Socialist Party highlighted that the involvement of women in politics started with the municipal councils.

“We began our effort to pave the way for women through the municipal councils. In 2011, only 12% were women and girls; in 2013, that number rose to 35%, in 2019 it reached 43%, and by 2023, it was 50% women and girls. It was the Socialist Party that made it a pre-requisite to increase the number of women and girls,” said Rama.

Rama stated that 71% of the Socialist Party team is made up of women and girls.

Rama said, “I find it hilarious when I hear them say that the Socialist Party wins because it steals votes or is supported by the ‘thugs.’ We win because we have the support of the grassroots. We win because we have the majority of women and girls with us. The victory on May 11th will be even greater.”

He called on women and girls to bring along other women and girls on election day.
On the other hand, Rama said that more women and girls are now part of the State Police and the Armed Forces.
“When we took office, fewer than 5% of women and girls wore uniforms in the State Police, and they were largely sidelined. Today, we’ve actually tripled their numbers in the State Police, and they are now actively patrolling, proudly representing us. In the Armed Forces, we initially found less than 10% of women and girls in uniform. Today, that number has doubled, with 22% holding officer ranks,” said Rama. /j.p/sm/
