TIRANA, Jan 7 /ATA/- The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, stated on Wednesday that, in the aftermath of the heavy rainfall, the authorities responsible for cultural heritage are maintaining continuous monitoring across the territory, prioritizing the protection of cultural assets.

Gonxhja noted that rainfall has persisted in the Shkodër region and neighboring areas, alongside the commencement of water discharges from the Koman and Vau i Dejës hydropower cascade.

He explained that conditions have worsened in the city of Lezhë, where the Drin River has overflowed its banks, leading to flooding in the city center. The flooding has also affected the riverside area near the ancient walls of Lissus and the Skanderbeg Memorial, due to the city’s drainage system being unable to channel water away amid elevated river levels.
Gonxhja reported that all other cultural heritage assets across the country remain under active monitoring and situational assessment. Despite elevated river and stream discharge levels, no damage or critical incidents have been identified at this time.
He noted that inspections conducted on several bridges under the responsibility of the Vlorë Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage have not revealed any structural or safety concerns. Surveillance activities are also underway in the Sarandë area, where, based on ongoing field reporting, no emergency or high-risk conditions have been detected to date. Additional updates will be issued as assessments continue.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, emphasized that on-site monitoring continues, prioritizing the protection of cultural heritage and enabling rapid response to any emerging threats.
