TIRANA, Dec 3 /ATA/ “Museums are our memory, so we must bring them alive and turn them into institutions that tell stories across all generations.” This is what the Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti, says while elaborating on one of the ongoing projects.

According to her, the network of Gjirokastra museums is among the most fascinating attractions that are being revitalized to speak to the public in the language of the time.

Gjirokastra, with its castle, cobblestone alleyways, stone walls and roofs and wooden balconies, represents a one of a kind architecture. Currently 4 buildings are in the process of restoration, forming the symbiosis of the old with the new in the preservation of historical features. Since the buildings have depreciated over the years, the interventions consist of restoration / reconstruction of cobblestone streets, restoration / reinforcement of the surrounding walls, aesthetic lighting, etc.

Currently, the restoration of cobblestones in ‘Sado Meleqi’ street and “Ramadan Mane” street continues apace, while in parallel, work is ongoing to restore the stone walls.
Meanwhile, in the Ismail Kadare” house the work for laying of electric wiring, internet cables, fire protection system, installation of CCTV cameras, heating system, etc. has already completed. The house was built in 1799, and was declared a cultural monument in 1991. The Kadare Museum House opened to the public on January 28, 2018 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Kadare’s birth. Kadare’s house sits in the middle of the historic Palorto neighbourhood and is easily accessible. Inside there are still some authentic objects that belong to the family such as a wooden chest, some photos etc.

The investment projects in Gjirokastra include the Ethnographic Museum, where plastering and rendering works as well as roof reconstruction are ongoing.

“The 40 percent of works on Ethnographic Museum have already completed. “Here there are pieces of the plaques with inscriptions by Edward Lear which will be part of the squares in entire itinerary of Edward Lear “, – Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti, said during an inspection.
These investments are intended to preserve the values of historical objects, as major attractions for tourists.

As a museum city rich in cultural heritage, Gjirokastra is part of the UNESCO World Heritage and is visited by about 80 thousand local and foreign visitors annually.
