TIRANA, July 30 /ATA/ – Albanian Parliament Speaker Elisa Spiropali has reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to contribute to a fairer and more peaceful world order and called for stronger global action to defend peace, justice, and democracy as she delivered a speech at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The conference focused on “Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice, and Prosperity.”

Spiropali highlighted Albania’s active role on the international stage, particularly referencing the Albanian Parliament’s early adoption of a resolution supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“As parliamentarians, we must lead the fight against all forms of threats and challenges to our societies. Albania stands proud alongside Ukraine, condemning Russian aggression unequivocally and supporting initiatives for accountability, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction,” she stated.

The Speaker emphasized the critical importance of parliamentary cooperation in today’s global climate, noting rising crises from Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Africa. She stressed that confronting challenges such as sovereignty violations, climate change, and social inequalities demands unwavering commitment to multilateralism and inter-parliamentary collaboration.

Spiropali also reflected on Albania’s democratic progress, from one of the world’s most isolated countries three decades ago to a regional leader and frontrunner in EU accession. She referenced Albania’s 2020 OSCE Chairmanship and its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council as examples of its constructive international engagement.

Currently a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Albania is strongly committed to promoting and defending fundamental rights globally, raising its voice against injustice and abuses.

Spiropali concluded by calling parliamentary diplomacy a vital “soft power” tool for ensuring security, peace, and prosperity, urging coordinated parliamentary action to transform multilateralism from theory into an effective force for global change.

“Without dedicated parliamentarians, multilateralism remains theory. Through joint and coordinated action, it becomes a powerful tool for change,” Spiropali stated.
