TIRANA, July 10 /ATA/ – Albania will initially deploy staff officers to the international stabilisation mission in Gaza, Defence Minister Ermal Nufi said on Friday, adding that any broader military contribution would depend on developments on the ground.

In an interview with Euronews Albania, Nufi said the decision followed a reconnaissance mission and an assessment by the Albanian Armed Forces’ General Staff, which determined the country’s initial level of participation.

“The first phase will involve deploying staff officers to join the command structure of the international stabilisation force in Gaza,” Nufi said. “Following an assessment of the situation and operational needs on the ground, we will determine the troops that could take part in a second phase.”

He said the proposal would be submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval through the relevant secondary legislation.

Nufi said Albania’s participation was in line with the government’s previously stated commitment to support international peace and stability initiatives.

The number of officers to be deployed, along with any subsequent phases of the mission, will be announced after the government formally approves the decision, he added.

TIRANA, Feb 20 /ATA/ – Interior Minister Albana Koçiu said on Friday that authorities have yet to determine the number of police or military personnel Albania will commit to the international security force for Gaza, but pledged a “maximal” commitment to the mission.

Speaking at a press conference in Tirana, Koçiu said the scale of Albania’s contribution would be decided in the coming days, following remarks by Prime Minister Edi Rama who confirmed the country’s readiness to contribute with troops to the Gaza stabilization force as he addressed the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington a day ago.

“I cannot provide concrete information today. However, Albania’s commitment will be as declared yesterday by Prime Minister Edi Rama at the meeting held in Washington. Our contribution will be in line with what is required,” Koçiu stated.

She said the number of personnel or other forms of support would be assessed in the days ahead.

“The commitment will be maximal, while ensuring the proper functioning of our institutions and safeguarding Albania’s international partnerships and engagements,” the Minister of Interior added.
