TIRANA, Oct 13 /ATA/ At the EU-Western Balkans Investment Forum taking place in Tirana, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the importance of value industrial chains.
Von der Leyen emphasized that it is crucial to develop additional supply chains, and that this effort should commence within Europe.
“In recent years, it has become clear that no industry should rely on a single supplier for critical inputs, and we must all avoid such bottlenecks and vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is essential to build more supply chains, and whenever possible, this effort should begin here in Europe,” said Von der Leyen.

The President of the European Commission added, “Many of the projects being discussed at this forum have the potential to fill gaps in Europe’s industrial supply chains. For example, through the production of batteries for the automotive industry, active ingredients for the pharmaceutical sector, textiles, and the list goes on. These investments create jobs and added value here in the region, while also making the rest of Europe more resilient and competitive. It is in our mutual interest to integrate these strategic local industries into the European Single Market.”
She highlighted that, as part of the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, a “highway” for the Single Market is being developed. “The aim is to connect local industries with continental supply chains. We plan to achieve this through regulatory integration as well as industrial alliances between
The President of the European Commission emphasized that investing in the Western Balkans means investing in a future continental market of 500 million people.

“We will start with key sectors where you should begin to reap the benefits of membership in our European Union even before becoming members. Across all sectors and directions, my argument remains the same: investing in the Western Balkans means investing in a future continental market of 500 million people. This is the message we need to send across — that your local projects have a European dimension and a European customer base,” she added.

According to her, the business case is highly attractive, and the return on investment is very promising for both the Western Balkans and the whole of Europe.

“For every step the Western Balkans takes towards our Union, new opportunities will arise, and you, the executives and investors in this room, have a crucial role to play. In fact, your perspective is vital,” declared the President of the European Commission from Tirana.

Von der Leyen concluded her speech by emphasizing that the region’s trajectory is clear: the future of the Western Balkans lies within the EU.

“At this conference, tell me, what do you need from us? To unlock new projects, tell me: where do you see the greatest growth potential? Let us know where your delegations intersect with ours so that we can move forward together, because the trajectory of this region is clear: the future of the Western Balkans is within our Union! It is up to all of us to make this a reality. So, thank you very much for being here today, and long live Europe!” said Von der Leyen.
