The Freedom Party officials briefed Ambassador Zannier on issues marring the electoral campaign.

Zannier met with Tedi Blushi, Secretary General of the Freedom Party, as the party’s leader Ilir Meta remains in pre-trial detention.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Freedom Party’s Secretary General said that he “informed Ambassador Zannier about the unjust and extreme detention of the party leader Ilir Meta without any evidence, in violation of the laws and the Constitution.”

On his part, the Head of the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission, Zannier told reporters that talk at the Freedom Party headquarters focused on campaign issues ahead of the 11 May general elections.

Asked about Meta’s arrest, Zannier declined to comment directly, saying the mission supports rule of law, transparency, and an impartial application of justice.

“We support the decisions by the Albanian institutions. We definitely support rule of law, transparency and impartial application of justice,” Zannier said.
