TIRANA, Jan 9 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Friday said his main opposition party would seek the formation of a technical government tasked with ensuring free and fair elections and refraining from interference in Albania’s justice system.

Speaking at a meeting titled “The Solution for Albania,” attended by opposition parties and civil society representatives, Berisha said “the opposition aims to come to power through the ballot box, not through violence.”

“We are asking for a technical government with just two objectives,” Berisha said. “First, to prepare free and fair elections, which no longer exist. We do not come to power by force, but through the free vote of Albanians.”

Berisha accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of using state resources to influence voters and called for tougher penalties for electoral crimes. He said those who fail to act against electoral violations should face severe punishment.

“The future of Albania depends on free elections. History has shown that democracy and free elections are the only system that builds a future,” he said.

The second objective of a technical government, Berisha said, would be to ensure that the executive does not interfere in the justice system.

“Justice is not infallible, but it must not be obstructed,” he said, adding that when executive power interferes in judicial processes, justice ceases to function.

Berisha said political change must come through the will of the people, rejecting the idea that the government could be removed through external pressure or court proceedings alone.

“The only judge the government cannot escape is the people,” he said, calling for a broad opposition front including political parties, civil society and public figures.
