TIRANA, Aug. 13 /ATA/ – More than 400 foreign patients received medical treatment at Mother Teresa University Hospital (QSUT) in Tirana, Albania’s largest hospital centre, in the first six months of 2026, the Health and Social Welfare Ministry said on Thursday.

The Ministry shared on social media the experiences of foreign patients who received treatment at the Tirana hospital, saying their cases reflected growing confidence in Albania’s public healthcare system.

“Even when a trip unexpectedly turns into a difficult health situation, they find professionals, technology and capacity within our healthcare system to meet their needs,” the Ministry said. “From emergency care and diagnosis to specialised treatment, our objective is clear: a hospital system that provides high standards for every patient, whether local or foreign.”

Turkish patient Engin Ozcan, who has been living in Albania for three months, said he was taken to the emergency department after experiencing chest pain.

“I believe I am alive today thanks to the attention and professionalism of the emergency doctors. They took the best possible care of me and carried out all the necessary tests and examinations,” he said.

His wife, Ozlem, said her husband had suddenly fallen ill several days earlier and was taken to the emergency department before being transferred to the cardiology ward.

“I feel we owe a great deal to the emergency doctors because he is well today thanks to them,” she said, adding that she had been impressed by the care and dedication shown by hospital staff.

“What impressed me most was that they did not treat only us this way, but all the patients,” she said.

A 71-year-old American patient said he suffered a cardiac arrest while having coffee in Shkoder. His wife called an ambulance, which arrived promptly and took him to the Tirana hospital.

“It could not have gone better,” he said, adding that doctors performed an intervention and inserted stents into his blood vessels.

He said he had been advised not to fly for two to three weeks but planned to return to Albania to continue his holiday.

“The doctor was phenomenal, as was every surgeon I have spoken to here in recent days,” he said.

Another foreign patient said he had been on holiday in Albania when he experienced chest tightness and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed a heart attack.

“Over five days, I underwent all the necessary examinations, including an angiogram. The doctors placed two stents in my heart arteries. I am feeling better now,” he said, adding that he was “extremely satisfied and even surprised” by the level of care he received.
