TIRANA, July 22 /ATA/ – Visual Capitalist, an international online platform on topics including markets, technology, energy and the global economy, has ranked Albania among the world’s top 50 food self-sufficient countries.

Based on data from the University of Leeds and the Economist Intelligence Unit, the ranking measures a country’s food self-sufficiency relative to domestic consumption, using seven main categories: fruits, vegetables, legumes, starch-based foods (bread, potatoes, rice), meat, fish, milk and dairy products, along with three additional products: eggs, sugars, and vegetable oils.

Albania ranks 41st, maintaining a balance between production and internal food consumption. The country scores high in several categories, including fruits and vegetables, covering 214% and 278% of domestic needs respectively, thanks to favorable climate and agricultural traditions in regions like Myzeqe, Fier, Lushnja, and Korça.

Other categories with strong self-sufficiency include meat at 156% and milk and dairy products at 501%. However, the country shows deficits in legumes, meeting only 70% of needs, and the lowest self-sufficiency is seen in starch-based products – bread, potatoes, and rice, meeting only 25% of the domestic demand, as well as fish at 18%.

The report states that self-sufficiency is achieved when a country scores 100% in each category. Values above 100% indicate a net exporter status in that category, while values below 100% show reliance on imports.
