TIRANA, June 10 /ATA/ – The government support through fiscal incentive policies for various sectors and economic activities worst-hit by the pandemic, as well as the launch of the mass immunisation campaign were the preconditions for the Albanian economy to start recovering and rebounding faster than other countries in the Western Balkan regions.

The small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) expert Daniel Guçe said that Albanian enter the COVID-19 lockdown period had an enormous impact on Albanian enterprises and business in 2020.

According to him, exporting companies, clothing and footwear companies and microenterprises were the categories heavily affected and found it hard to cope with the situation.

“Despite the difficulties, last year had its dynamics with new start-ups launched and increased online delivery service. A number of companies went bankrupt. However, the last year’s outcome was positive in terms of the Albanian business register, recording a 2.5 % year-on-year,” Guçi told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA).

According to him, a series of factors have influenced creation of new enterprises in 2020.

“But I would single out the government measures to support business, the accommodative fiscal policies, including the decision to scrap the profit tax on small businesses, and support through grants have all helped to return economy and doing business back to normal,” Guçi said.

The need for self-employment – he went on to say – is also a factor behind opening new businesses. The microenterprises account for around 66% of the total of SMEs and they are mainly household business activities.

According to INSTAT, number of active firms in Albania rose by 2.5% to 162,452 in 2020.
