In the areas of Cakran, Frakull, and Kafaraj, strawberry cultivation surfaces have expanded significantly in recent years, with farmers investing in modern greenhouses and advanced cultivation technologies.

As the strawberry season reaches its peak and local markets are supplied, a team from the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) captured images from the fields that have become a defining feature of the landscape. Travelers heading south via Levan can hardly miss the extensive greenhouses dedicated to strawberry production.

According to data from the Fier Agriculture Directorate, approximately 130 hectares of strawberries are currently cultivated within the Fier municipality, distributed across around 250 farms. Average yields reach 600 quintals per hectare, reflecting improvements in cultivation techniques and agricultural practices adopted by farmers.

The bulk of production is concentrated in the Frakull administrative unit, where around 110 hectares are under cultivation, making it one of the main production hubs for strawberries in the region.

Statistics show a steady year-on-year increase in cultivated areas, while this year’s yields are reported to be higher compared to 2025, thanks to favorable climatic conditions and the adoption of more advanced farming methods.

A significant share of production is directed toward export markets.

Official data indicate that around 60% of strawberries produced in Fier are exported, mainly to regional countries and the European Union, increasing farmers’ income and strengthening the sector’s role in the national economy.

The continued expansion of this crop, combined with rising demand for “Made in Albania” products, is turning strawberries into one of the most promising agricultural sectors for sustainable development and export growth.

Rama stated that this road will provide a significant boost to local economic growth of the Mallakastra area.

“Around 20 houses were affected, but no residents were harmed. The full evacuation of all inhabitants has been completed,” Balluku said, noting that some water remains due to the area’s proximity to the river source.

Balluku praised the Armed Forces for their role, saying “they have been extraordinary during these challenging days.”

No rainfall is expected in the coming two to three days, allowing recovery work to begin. Balluku said controlled water releases from the Devoll cascade have been reduced to a minimum to ease pressure on the river.

During monitoring of the situation on the ground, at the Mifoli bridge in Fier, Salla told reporters that some local residents have refused to be evacuated, so the intervention is being carried out in cooperation with Civil Emergencies.

“The Drainage Board in this region is on the ground with 16 excavators, working to repair the embankments and rapid interventions with heavy vehicles to prevent floods,” said the minister.

He added that the pumping stations are operating at full capacity to cope with the situation created by the heavy rainfall and every development is being monitored to protect residents and their properties.

“We are close to the residents together with the municipal teams to identify the damages caused by the situation in the livestock and agriculture sector, and to support every family affected by compensation for damages from this situation”, emphasized Salla.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared in the social media views of Gjanica and wrote that its transformation represents one of the most significant examples of urban and environmental regeneration in the country, turning it from an “Environmental degradation and flood risk” into a modern promenade for the citizens.

The main part is now completed, reducing pollution in the city as well as the fetid smell that the river brought.

The project extends over a length of about 5 kilometers, which positions this promenade as the longest in the country, developed on both sides of the river while work is underway on the last 2 kilometers. The project foresees the construction of two levels of promenade, with sidewalks, lighting and green spaces where possible.

With the completion of this project, the city of Fier not only gains a new recreational space, but also guarantees a long-term solution to the environmental problems and floods that have plagued it for decades.
