TIRANA, November 1/ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama commemorated the historical leader of the Socialist Party, former prime minister Fatos Nano, who passed away yesterday at the age of 72 after serious disease.

Rama shared in the social media a farewell video postcard with the highlights of Fatos Nano’s political career and life.

Rama stressed that Nano will never be separated from our memories and from the place of honor in the history of our great family, while he conveyed his fraternal condolences to all those who had him as leader, friend and comrade.

The video shows parts of Nano’s speech at the Congress of June 10, 1991, where he stated that: “The Socialist Party of Albania, through this Congress, expresses to the country, the world and the future the message that it will continue to fight democratically to remain one of the main political forces and alternatives in the life of the country and in European life.”

The video also shows an account of Nano’s arrest.

“It was an arrest that went against the principles of the rule of law, which was also against the rules of the Albanian Criminal Procedure Code. A fair trial was denied,” Nano said in French about the arrest and the court process.

The video also shows the period of unrest in 1997, the election of Bashkim Fino as prime minister in the National Reconciliation government.

“I will not leave the country and I would invite, in these difficult moments, every Albanian not to leave the country,” Nano said in a statement.

Further on, the video shows footage of the SP’s victory in the 1997 elections and coming to power.

The video also shows the riots of 1998, where the Premier’s Office and other institutions were attacked.

“We will no longer allow anyone to attack, bomb or shell the democratically elected institutions in the heart of the Balkans, which you know very well is in an extremely dangerous situation,” Nano said in English to the media.

Further on, the video shows the years of government and meetings with various world leaders.

The video ends with a message that Fatos Nano addressed to the socialists.

“We have known and been able to preserve the best traditions, renew ourselves and change Albania, facing the challenges of development and moving with the pace of time. Let us pass the baton from fathers to sons, keeping at the forefront of Albanian society a force of generations, which is Europeanizing Albania with the energy of youth and the maturity of veterans. Let us continue the reforms to raise Albania to the standards of the European Union for economic development, for the rule of law and for the fight against corruption. This is our historical mission and our challenge with time and with ourselves. No one else can fulfill this mission. Without reaching this irreversible point, everything we have done will remain unfinished business. May the golden days and years continue for Albania and for the generations to come. May you live long and always be right on the mark”, said Nano. /gj.m/ /a.g/p.s./
