TIRANA, May 21 /ATA/ Raimund Jehle, Director of the FAO Program for Europe and Central Asia, and also the FAO representative in Albania, described agriculture in Albania as “an important developing sector that employs 36% of the population and provides significant income to the country’s economy.”

In a televised interview today, Jehle stated that “agriculture in Albania should not be seen merely as a production process, but as a sector with a broad impact on income generation.”

He further emphasized that agriculture must be closely linked to environmental and social concerns, shaping the way people live and interact in rural communities.

Jehle touched on the sustainable development of this sector and the support that FAO provides to Albanian farmers.

“Our goal is to produce food while using water resources as efficiently as possible. Albania has abundant water resources, but we must keep in mind that, due to climate change, the situation is gradually shifting. Therefore, we need a production methodology that addresses all these challenges. This is precisely what we mean when we talk about sustainable agricultural production,” he emphasized.

Jehle explained that a good example of this approach is the work FAO is doing with an incubator for rural women in Elbasan and the biological protection of chestnut forests.

“We are equipping them with technology and expertise, enabling these women farmers to process and market their vegetables. This not only secures their income but also contributes to the broader development of the value chain. Another noteworthy initiative is a project dedicated to the biological protection of chestnut forests, designed to enhance income stability, support rural communities, and foster sustainable rural growth,” Jehle remarked.

He highlighted Albania’s rich biodiversity, its ideal climate for growing a diverse range of crops, and its advantageous geographic position with significant tourism potential—three essential elements that set the country apart in agriculture and rural development.

According to him, the development of agri-food systems signifies economic, environmental, and social sustainability.

Speaking about the digitalization of agriculture, Jehle stated that it involves the use of modern satellite technologies to produce food and utilize resources more efficiently.

“The Digital Agriculture and Rural Transformation in Albania, currently implemented by the FAO Office in Albania, plays a crucial role in this regard. On one hand, it supports farmers through the Farmers’ Portal, providing them with access to market information and other key data. On the other hand, the project enhances the use of data, including satellite imagery, phytosanitary control information, and advisory services—all of which facilitate the direct transfer of knowledge and expertise to farmers,” Jehle emphasized.

He underscored that Albania’s development is shaped by its continuing journey toward European Union membership.

Jehle emphasized that agriculture plays a crucial role in agricultural production, food security, and processing.

“Beyond translating legislation, FAO is supporting sectoral institutions in establishing the necessary systems required for drafting relevant policies within the framework of EU accession,” Jehle emphasized.

“There is real potential for investment in agriculture as well as agritourism, by connecting agricultural production with tourism. One area that has not been discussed enough but deserves more attention is aquaculture and the fisheries sector. Albania has a long coastline, and aquaculture and fisheries are integral parts of the agri-food system. This presents a unique opportunity to integrate food production with tourism and attract investment in a stunning landscape and environment,” Jehle stated.
