Former Democratic Party deputy Ervin Salianji was arrested on September 27, 2024, just one day after the appellate court upheld the Tirana Court’s December 18, 2019 ruling, which convicted Salianji of “false reporting” in connection with the audio recording in the Babale case and sentenced him to one year in prison. The audio recording allegedly implicated the brother of former Interior Minister Fatmir Xhafaj in a narcotics trafficking case.

In his recourse, Salianji challenged the decision handed down by Court of Appeals (September 26, 2024), which sentenced him to one year in prison.
Salianji was charged with active involvement in the publication of false reporting, damaging the reputation of the individuals involved. The Appeals Court handed down the decision after a lengthy judicial process.

Salianji is currently serving his sentence at the Fier prison facility and has referred to the charges against him as politically motivated, which is why he is exercising recourse to High Court is seeking his release.
