TIRANA, April 29 /ATA/ The rehabilitation of the third section of the Gjanica River continues apace, driving the urban transformation in the city of Fier. The investment by the Albanian government, through the Albanian Development Fund (FSHZH), is expected to deliver a direct impact on the quality of life in the city.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, the Mayor of Fier, Armando Subashi, and the Director of the Albanian Development Fund (FSHZH), Dritan Agolli, saw first-hand the work on the third section of this project.

“In the construction site of the third section of the Gjanica River’s regeneration and urban revitalization project, which was once an environmental eyesore—heavily polluted and a source of flooding in the city center—today it has been transformed into one of the most beautiful promenades in Albania, completing the urban transformation in the revitalized city of Fier,” said Rama.

Balluku, for her part, called this one of the most important projects ever implemented in the city of Fier. “A large part of the site cleanup has been completed for the construction of the third section,” she stated.

Dritan Agolli, the Director of ADF, highlighted that the third section, spanning 5 kilometers, completes the full length of the Gjanica River within the city. “It has the potential to become the largest promenade in any city in Albania. What was once an urban blight is now transforming into a beautiful promenade and green space,” Agolli remarked.

He mentioned that the riverbed concrete work is expected to be completed by August, with the entire project set to be finished by the end of the year, seamlessly integrating with the two sections delivered earlier.

The Gjanica River rehabilitation is a key element of a larger vision to reconceptualize the city center of Fier, which also entails the construction of the Sports Palace and the redevelopment of the central square – a public space that the city had previously lacked.

The goal of this project is to revitalize the Gjanica River, making it one of the key natural and recreational assets in the urban area of Fier.
