TIRANA, Nov 17 /ATA/ – The Ministry of Justice has formally sent to Switzerland a request to extradite former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj.

According to the media, the move was disclosed during a hearing in the “Buka” case on Monday, where judge Irena Gjoka read replies from Interpol Tirana. Ahmetaj’s lawyer, Henrik Ligori, said his client has “no security measure” in this case and that any such measure relates to another investigation.

Special anticorruption prosecutor Elvin Gokaj sought testimony from 14 witnesses, including Former Finance Minister Shkëlqim Cani, and said investigators were checking “a large sum of money” transferred from Albania to an EU country.

According to the Special Anticorruption Prosecution Structure (SPAK), Ahmetaj allowed the privatization of land owned by the state company “Buka Sha” while serving as Finance Minister, allegedly causing 7 billion lekë in damages.

Ahmetaj denied the existence of a new extradition request, saying on social media that the only request was filed in August 2023 and that claims of suspicious transfers were unfounded.
