Only during June 20-26, an average of 65 tons of watermelons were exported every day to Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria from the markets of Lushnja and Fier.

Albania has favorable climate conditions for the cultivation of watermelon, which starts from April and continues until October, encouraging shareholder farmers, family businesses, but also entrepreneurs to cultivate large areas of land.
A part of the watermelon growers’ production is exported to regional and international markets, contributing to the growth of the local economy.

Watermelon production in Albania has increased in the last 3 years, according to INSTAT references, in 2022 it has reached a production of 280,994 tons, from 240,000 tons a year ago.

Albania has already gained a stable export lead in EU markets as well, as it exports watermelons mainly to neighboring countries in the Balkan region, including Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, countries that are geographically close and have great demand for fresh fruit, especially during the summer season, also related to tourism.

Meanwhile, Albanian farmers and exporters have set their sights on improving the quality of produced watermelon, in order to meet the demands of international markets. With the support of the National Scheme or various projects, they are using modern practices in agricultural production such as seedling quality, varieties, implementation of irrigation systems and implementation of quality control measures throughout the production process.
