TIRANA, February 24/ATA/ During presentation of the project to transform Ex-Block neighborhood to a pedestrian zone with the support of the global network “WALK 21”, Prime Minister Edi Rama considered it a long-awaited development that will delight many local residents and citizens of Tirana and will create another fantastic urban space in the heart of the capital.

In his speech at this event, Rama reminded the effort that was made to transform part of the Ex-Block into a pedestrian zone, at the time when he was mayor of Tirana.

“I believe that this is the right way”, said Rama.

“On the other hand, I would like you to change the idea that in order to reduce traffic flow you have to widen the roads. This is completely untrue; as a matter of fact, the opposite is true. I do not mean the main national roads that connect the cities to each other, but I mean the internal roads of the city”, added Rama.

“You can widen the roads in this area with another lane by cutting down the trees, but it will not change anything, on the contrary, it is very likely that the flow and intensity of traffic will increase”, said PM Rama.

He added that, “Discouraging traffic is the answer. I believe that in this area, it will be very worthwhile to move forward with this project because it is an easily accessible central area from where residents generally do not have long distances to cover”.

The prime minister underlined that by stimulating walking and the movement of people it will be much more efficient for businesses in the area, which will be the main beneficiaries of the project.

In conclusion, the prime minister underlined the necessity for a proper approach that is needed in terms of informing and exchanging the project and the idea with the community.

“The local residents here must be the first to support and embrace the project and then adapt themselves”, Rama concluded. /j.p/p.s./
