TIRANA, Jan 17 /ATA/ – Progress of Albania’s energy sector, almost entirely dependent on renewable and hydropower for its electricity supply, has drawn the attention of the international media.

Europa Today has compared Albania with Sweden, underlining the fact the country has almost met the renewable energy target set forth by Brussels for 2030.

“Albania has yet to become a European Union member, but the country can boast of already being in line with the renewable energy target set by Brussels for 2030, on which most of current member states are struggling, including Italy. Yes, because if the EU envisages a share of energy consumed from renewable sources of 42.5% by the end of the decade, Tirana today stands at 44%, a percentage that brings it close to the Scandinavian champions, much higher than the Union average and more than double that of Italy,” the leading Italian media said.

The article cites the 2022 Eurostat data, ranking Albania immediately after the three Scandinavian nations for the renewable energy production. In total, 17 of the 27 EU members reported shares lower than the EU average of 23.0% in 2022.

“The new Renewable Energy Directive has revised the EU’s renewable energy target for 2030 upwards from 32% to 42.5% (with the aim of increasing it to 45%), recalls the statistics institute European. Therefore, EU countries must step up their efforts to collectively meet the new EU target for 2030,” Europa Today said.
